Donal is to swim the English Channel next August for the learning disabled charity MENCAP. "I needed an explanation for my expanding waist line and thought that this would do." Swimmers are required to put on weight to protect them from the cold. This is goin to be a trial run for the full event next year - although if he is lucky he may not need the extra year's trainig. It is hoped that he will be joined by a team of Learning Disabled swimmers who will relay across. Donal has run marathons for MENCAP before and represented Ireland at the World Canoe Championships but this is likely to be his toughest challenge yet. "I was sick of being passed out by 6ft 7in mobile phones during London marathon and thought I would avoid them by taking to the water". I have always loved the magic of the epic swim. The glorious history of the event celebrates everything that is wonderful about the English attitude to sport - a wholesome corinthian spirit - madcap endeavour and stubborn never say die attitude. I actually never wanted to swim it but wanted to film others doing it. But someone suggested me as a victim and MENCAP were planning an event so I decided to have a go - here's praying! |
