Dr Crosby TV probe
DISGRACED GP Dr Stephen Crosby will be the focus of a TV documentary - days after being struck off by the General Medical Council.

Investigative journalist Donal MacIntyre speaks to one of Crosby's victims in a Channel 5 programme to be aired next week.

Crosby was jailed for five years in March for sexually assaulting female patients while carrying out internal examinations.

Filmmakers will not reveal the identity of the victim until the documentary - Can You Trust Your Doctor - is shown on Tuesday.

During the programme, the woman says: "I had internal examination after internal examination and I couldn't see any reason for it.

"Every time I went for an injection in my stomach, which was part of the treatment I was receiving, he kept saying he wanted to check me.

"And then I'd have to have an internal examination.

"I felt it was just far too many internal examinations.

"And on one occasion he touched me - I can only say in a way that only my husband should touch me."

Crosby, who is a former partner at the Village Surgery in Elbow Lane, was banned from practising as a GP last week.

The married father of seven was charged with 26 separate indecent assaults on women patients over a 21-year period.

He was tried on 12 charges, convicted of seven and cleared of five.

Speaking about the day she heard the verdict, his victim said: "I bought an evening paper just to see what was being printed and to my horror I discovered that in February 2001 he'd actually indecently exposed himself.

"Now he was still practising because I certainly saw him in October 2001. So nobody seems to have stopped him. A criminal offence like that - and he went on to assault me and however many other women?"

In October 2002 Crosby was forced to declare the indecent exposure incident to the newlyformed Southport and Formby Primary Care Trust.

The PCT also learned of a complaint against Crosby in 1997 after which he was advised to be chaperoned while carrying out internal examinations.

Not complying, he committed a further three sexual assaults.

Judge John Roberts ordered that Crosby be put on the Sex Offenders' Register for life.

Southport and Formby PCT chose not to comment on the programme.

The documentary will be aired on Channel 5 on Tuesday, December 7, at 8pm.
