Pair in Court over Gangster's Murder

A man and a woman appeared in court today charged in connection with the murder of one of Manchester’s most notorious gangsters.

Derek McDuffus, 41, of Merseybank Avenue, Chorlton, Greater Manchester, appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court charged with the murder of Desmond Noonan.

Shajahan Cooke, 39, also of Merseybank Avenue, appeared alongside McDuffus charged with perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender with intent to impede arrest.

Gangland boss Noonan was found with stab wounds to the body close to his home, also on Merseybank Avenue, on March 18.

The 46-year-old was discovered at around 11.40pm and was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.

His death came just days before a programme was broadcast on Channel Five in which he bragged about being linked to 25 murders.

In the show Noonan, known as “Dessie” to friends, told investigative journalist Donal MacIntyre that he and his 39-year-old brother Dominic were feared in the city.

No application for bail was made and both defendants were remanded in custody to appear at Manchester Crown Court on April 6.
