Respects paid to gangland leader

Desmond Noonan's funeralHundreds of people have been paying their respects to murdered gangland leader Desmond Noonan.
The 45-year-old's body was found outside a house on Merseybank Avenue, Chorlton, on Friday 18 March.

Traffic was at a standstill as the horse-drawn hearse carried his body to St Aidan's Church in south Manchester.

Mr Noonan's brother, Dominic, who led the cortege to the church, said: "Anyone who knows Dessy knows that he would love all this attention."

A kilted pipe band led the carriage carrying Noonan's casket, which was covered in red roses and white lilies.

His family, who are originally from Dublin, filed into the church and the service was relayed on loudspeakers as mourners gathered outside the church.

Mr Noonan died days before a Channel Five documentary, in which he boasted he had "more guns than the police", was broadcast.

Police warned the public about traffic delays in the Chorlton area before and after the 1100 BST service.

Derek McDuffus, 41, originally from south Manchester, has been charged with his murder.

Shajahan Cooke, 39, from Chorlton, has been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Both have been remanded in custody and are awaiting trial at Manchester Crown Court.

The inquest into Mr Noonan's death was opened and adjourned on Tuesday.
