macintyre’s toughest towns - portsmouth
In this series, journalist Donal MacIntyre pinpoints
the locations at the heart of the prevailing social
problems and offers an insight into the underworld
of each town by talking to the people committing
the crimes, including drug dealers, football
hooligans, arsonists and gang members. The series
examines what is being done by the authorities to
combat these anti-social problems and hears from
victims whose lives have been blighted by crime.

The first programme of the night profiles the
notorious hooligans associated with recently
promoted Premiership football team Portsmouth
FC. In recent years, the club has been top of the
league for match arrests. At the centre of one of the
biggest football riots in recent history, ‘Pompey'
boasts one of the most notorious firms in Britain.

The programme speaks directly to the fans about
their motivation, including a new crew entitled ‘The
House of Burberry' who have created a new
generation of hooligans in the town.

The second programme profiles Bristol's crack
cocaine epidemic. In the last twenty years, the drug
of choice in Bristol has changed from cannabis to
the highly addictive crack, with an estimated 12,000
crack addicts living in the notorious St Paul's area
alone. The highly prosperous market has led to an
increase in violent conflicts between rival drug gangs.
