Donal MacIntyre investigates the phenomena of the Bermuda Triangle and goes undercover in Big Sting The Bermuda Triangle is a region that continues to confound experts with a history of unexplained disappearances dating back to the 18th century. In 1945, on a clear afternoon in December, five Navy Avenger torpedo bombers took off from Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station on a short routine flight. Less than two hours later, the flight leader alerted the control tower that they were lost and unable to tell in which direction they were flying. The bombers were never heard from again. Over the years many theories have been put forward in an attempt to explain the strange phenomena. Magnetic vortices, space-time warps, extraterrestrial activity and an ancient energy source from the lost city of Atlantis, have all been suggested as potential causes. Following on from 'Killer Shark Live' - next year Donal MacIntyre goes inside "The Bermuda Triangle Live", produced by Brighter Pictures (part of Endemol UK), the live seven day event will explore the science behind the mysterious and dramatic history of The Bermuda Triangle - a region of the Atlantic Ocean located between Bermuda, Miami, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The nightly programmes will explore the theories behind this incredible modern mystery, with its history of unexplainable disappearances of ships and planes that defy any logical reasoning. Each night different theories will be tested to challenge the myth and demystify the legend following the paths of doomed missions and some of the Triangle's famous victims, including, The Ellen Austin in 1881, The U.S.S. Cyclops in 1918 and the disappearing yacht called Witchcraft in 1967 - culminating with an investigation on the disappearance of the legendary Flight 19 in 1945. Five's Controller of Features and Entertainment, Ben Frow, said: "This investigation promises to present the definitive guide to a mystery that has fascinated audiences for decades, leaving no stone unturned. The Bermuda Triangle Live will be a unique journey into history, myth and human drama." Executive Producer is Elaine Hackett and Series Producer is Nick Aarons.
